New York - Oscar winner Russell Crowe has been replaced by Heath Ledger in the new untitled Baz Luhrmann $150 million epic.

Crowe was to play Nicole Kidman's lover later this year in the movie, which is a love story set in Australian outback just before the Japanese bombardment of Darwin in 1942.

But Crowe has been accused of demanding script approval before signing on for the film.

While he was procrastinating, the producers reportedly told Luhrmann to find another actor. The director then met Ledger several times. "Baz liked him and offered him the movie," a source told the New York Post yesterday.

"Then Crowe came back to Luhrmann and said he'd forgo script approval and wanted to do the film, but they told him it was too late – to buzz off."

A spokeswoman for Luhrmann last night declined to deny or confirm the report.

"Baz doesn't publicly comment on his casting processes, and currently he has made no final decision on the film, who is in it or when or where it will be shot," a spokeswoman said.

Crowe's representative has no comment.

A jednak Heath nie zagra u Luhrmanna, ma mieć jakoby jakąś role w innym wysokobudżetowym filmie... niestety nie podają jakim ?)

LATEST: Heath Ledger has turned down the chance to replace Russell Crowe in Baz Luhrmann's new $150 million untitled film epic. But the director is now stranded without a leading man after Ledger passed on his project in favor of another big budget movie, according to Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph.

Hollywood star Heath Ledger cried all night after being attacked with water pistols by paparazzi pests at the Sydney premiere of Brokeback Mountain, his father has revealed.

Kim Ledger told The Daily Telegraph how his heart broke when Heath called just hours after the January incident, saying he wanted to sell his Bronte home and move to the US.

"Heath had to go into the cinema and introduce that film soaking wet. He cried all night," the automotive engineer said after the weekend's NSW Dutton Car Rally. "He rang me and said, 'Dad, that's it -- sell the house".

Mr Ledger, who lives in Perth but bought the $4.45 million beachside home for his only son in 2004, told Heath to think about it for 48 hours.

"Two days later he rang me back and said, 'Dad, it's been 47 hours and 57 minutes -- sell the house," he said.

The property sold for $7 million in March.

But Mr Ledger believes the 26-year-old's relocation to Brooklyn with partner Michelle Williams and baby Matilda will not be forever.

"He loves it. It's his home and he's not going to run away," he said.

1- Il a commencé jeune dans le métier.
Il n'est donc pas un de ces jeunes acteurs tout beau, tout neuf que peuvent servir trop souvent les américains. Dès 10 ans, il participe à des cours de théâtre. Il abandonnera le Hockey, à 15 ans, pour se consacrer au jeu d'acteur, il en profite pour devenir financièrement indépendant en cumulant les petits jobs. "Et un jour j'ai fermé les yeux, puis en les rouvrant le hobby s'était transformé, en occupation".

2- Il a fréquenté les planches.
Un acteur se forge en jouant au théàtre, c'est bien connu, tous les bons acteurs y sont passés. Après des débuts dans une troupe locale, il poursuit son expérience au sein de la Globe Shakespearian Company de la Midnight Youth Acting Company.

3- Il a commencé à la télévision.
Dans une série australienne, tournée dans le Queenslands, Roar. Il incarnait le rôle d'un jeune prince celtique. Ce qui lui évite de prendre la grosse tête trop vite en étant parachuté à Hollywood sans avoir un peu ramé. Et puis on apprend beaucoup dans les studios de télé.

4- Il joue dans des films indépendants.
Ses trois premiers films le sont. Two Hands a même été projeté à Sundance et malgré ce caractére indépendant, a fait le deuxième meilleur score au B.O lors de sa sortie en Australie (après Babe qui bat tous les records). On a pu aussi l'admirer dans Monster's ball, en fils de Billy Bob Thornton, apte à fréquenter les putes.

5- Il utilise toute sa palette d'acteur.
Tour à tour il a incarné un acteur shakespearien (Paws), un violeur (Blackrock), un "humanitaire" des sans-abri (Two hands), un rebelle au coeur tendre (10 Things...) ou encore un trop jeune guerrier (The Patriot). Il fut écuyer usurpateur d'identité afin de disputer un tournoi (Knight's Tale), puis en officier anglais du 19ème (Four Feathers). Polyvalent, il chante aussi dans ses films (10 Things)... oui, oui, c'est bien lui.

6- Il fait des choix controversés et difficiles.
Il ne choisit pas des films toujours accessibles au grand public. Par exemple Blackrock a été interdit au moins de 15 ans, classé dans la même veine que Kids de Larry Clark. Il refuse les scénarios des comédies romantiques qui tombent après 10 Things..., créneau qui aurait pu être facilement exploitable vu son physique. Il dénigre aussi le rôle, très convoité, du petit ami de Buffy dans la prochaine saison de Buffy contre les Vampires. Et la palme revient à son refus de jouer notre héros de jeunesse Spider-Man. En revanche il aime tourner avec Terry Gilliam, Ang Lee, Lasse Hallström. Rien que ça.

7- Il a des faiblesses.
Sa plus grosse, il l'avoue lui-même, se sont ses catastrophiques auditions. Pour The Patriot, il est sorti au milieu de la deuxième scène en leur proposant de revenir plus tard. Heureusement, la seconde chance fût la bonne, celle qui lui donna l'occasion de rencontrer son compatriote, Mel Gibson.

8- C'est un sportif.
En tant que cavalier accompli, il a tourné lui-même toutes les scènes de cascades. Il surfe et manie la crosse de hockey, mais c'est une autre affaire en ce qui concerne les armes à feu. "Il a fallu me recoudre le doigt, parce que, lors d'une prise, je me le suis déchiré en armant un mousquet. J'ai pleuré comme un bébé".

9- Il aime le cinéma.
Et pas n'importe lequel : les comédies musicales, Gene Kelly et Judy Garland (son actrice favorite) et Les Enfants du Paradis reste son film préféré...

10- Il est terriblement hot.
Cela n'a peut-être pas effleuré les mâles assis dans les salles de projection, mais Heath a du charme, ce qui ne gâche rien. Un sourire montant jusqu'aux oreilles, il porte aussi bien les cheveux longs que courts, il est très naturel. En plus, d'après ses propres mots, il est un éternel romantique près à mettre son orgueil et sa virilité de côté. Mais ne vous pâmez, chères demoiselles [et chers messieurs (przyp. jerry)], son coeur est pris...

Heath Ledger surprised a packed Berlin Film Festival news conference Wednesday night when he remarked that he believes George Clooney deserves the best supporting actor Oscar this year for his performance in Syriana. Jake Gyllenhaal, who appeared in Brokeback Mountain with Ledger (who himself was nominated for a best actor Oscar) is also one of the best supporting actor nominees. Ledger's remark came after a reporter noted that Clooney had told an earlier news conference at the festival that he did not expect to win in any of the three categories for which he had been nominated (he's also nominated in the director and screenplay categories for Good Night, and Good Luck), adding, "There's been a lot of Brokeback Mountain stuff." Ledger, appearing at the festival to promote his latest film, the Australian-produced Candy, expressed delight that he had been able to make five films back-to-back over the past year and credited director Terry Gilliam for showcasing his talents in The Brothers Grimm, thereby opening up more "interesting choices" for him. He said that he found working in Australia on Candy "incredibly liberating in the sense that it was the first film I've done using my own accent in about eight years." When one reporter asked what the difference was for him to be making love to a woman in one film and to a man in another, he replied, "The stubble."

A previous version of this article featured the headline "Ledger Says Clooney, Not Gyllenhaal, Deserves Oscar." While Mr. Ledger did indeed say he believed Mr. Clooney deserved an Oscar, he made no mention of Mr. Gyllenhaal while speaking on the subject.

Heath Ledger is horrified that some people who watched him introduce a clip from “Brokeback Mountain” at the Screen Actors Guild Awards misinterpreted his stage fright as some kind of gay spoof.

Ledger, speaking from his cell phone, called to explain. Seems the jitters started when he was sitting at the table with the “Brokeback” cast and he wondered aloud who was going to introduce their cast.

“I leaned over and asked Jake [Gyllenhaal] and he said, ‘WE are! Didn’t you get the script?' I said, WHAT? I thought it was a script for the Directors Guild Awards a few nights earlier.”

He and Gyllenhaal raced backstage to read it and try to rehearse. But there was no time and they were told to go out onstage. Gulp.

“I’m nervous under any circumstances in front of crowds," says Ledger. "I am not a public speaker and never will be. I was so nervous before the DGA Awards backstage that my jaw was jittering and I could not get the words out. I’m just not one of those naturally funny relaxed actors who enjoy the spotlight and are so good at it. And this was really weird because we were basically introducing ourselves, like here’s this brilliant cast and guess what, it’s us.”

So he got the giggles. Who wouldn’t? “How can you say all that stuff — 'two brave cowboys' — with a straight face? It was just so surreal.”

As for his self-described “teacup hand” position. “I’ve stood like that since I was a kid. You can ask me mum. It's nerves I guess. I’m a very fidgety person, always moving, never able to sit or stand still.”

Ledger wanted to set the record straight before any harm was done. “I am so sorry and I apologize for my nervousness. I would be absolutely horrified if my stage fright was misinterpreted as a lack of respect for the film, the topic and for the amazing filmmakers.”
