Taiwan director Ang Lee honoured by home town for Brokeback Mountain

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) - Oscar-winning director Ang Lee was honoured by his home town of Tainan on Friday for his gay romance Brokeback Mountain, a movie that attracted huge crowds on the socially conservative island.

Lee, who lives in the United States, was on his first visit to Taiwan since the movie won four Academy Awards in March. He was the first Asian to pick up Hollywood's prestigious best director award.

Flanked by his Oscar statuette, Lee handed an autographed Brokeback Mountain promotional poster to Tainan Mayor Hsu Tain-tsair during a ceremony at the city government building. Both men donned Brokeback Mountain type cowboy hats in honour of the occasion.

Hsu gave Lee a ceramic statuette of a dragon and a horse, animals to which Chinese culture ascribes great speed.

Lee modestly rebuffed the comparison.

"I'm a very disciplined man, I learned the art of filming slowly, bit by bit, because I'm not a natural talent," he said.
